Don't Talk About Gun Control!

Every time there is a mass shooting we hear the same cries. "We need gun control". The problem is every time some one even suggests gun control or gun reform there is a rush of people who are ready to defend their 2nd amendment rights. And despite polling numbers that show the majority of Americans are in favor of common sense gun control, nothing happens. No progress.
After speaking with a friend, I realized, this isn't a gun problem, this a marketing problem...and the problem is with the language of "GUN CONTROL". Those in favor of gun rights will defend their rights to own a gun and any suggestion of "GUN CONTROL" will cause them to defend their rights at all costs. The solution. Don't say "GUN CONTROL". Here are a list of reforms that can address some of the current issues without any talk of "GUN CONTROL":
1. Homeland Security: Anyone who is on a Terror watch list and who is not permitted to fly should not be permitted to purchase a gun;
2. Welfare Reform: I've seen several proposals that Welfare recipients should be drug tested. The idea is that Welfare recipients should not be using taxpayer dollars to purchase drugs. I believe it is only common sense that Welfare recipients should not use tax payer dollars to purchase guns and should be drug tested.
3. Mental Health Reform: Anyone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness and has been prescribed medication for mental illness should not be permitted to purchase a gun.
4. Drug Reform: According to Drugabuse.gov, in 2013, 17.3 million Americans met the clinical criteria for dependence on alcohol; 4.2 million Americans met the clinical criteria for dependence of marijuana; and 1.9 million Americans were addicted to prescription pain killers (that's five times the amount of people addicted to cocaine). In 2013, there was an estimated 22.7 million Americans who needed treatment for a problem related to drugs or alcohol yet only 2.5 million people received treatment. DO WE REALLY WANT TO ALLOW OVER 20 MILLION DRUG ADDICTS THE ABILITY TO PURCHASE GUNS? You must be able to pass a drug test in order to acquire a gun.
As a Country, we need to stop talking about "GUN CONTROL", and we need to start talking about ways to keep America safe. Address the issues with Homeland Security, Welfare, Mental Health, and Drug Abuse. If you're like me and tired of politicians avoiding the gun control debate because they fear backlash, perhaps we need to change our language in order to get results. Don't talk to your elected officials about "Gun Control", they have already proven they won't listen.
